A crime has been committed and it is time for the Senate to enforce the law. The Government Accountability Office (GAO) has determined that Donald Trump violated the law when he withheld aid from Ukraine. That is all we need to know. There’s no debate here, or negotiation. A crime has been committed. Action must be taken.

The Republicans are turning this into a partisan issue but, there’s no gray area here. We have laws for a reason, if you violate those laws, you face the consequences. It doesn’t matter what Donald Trump’s reasoning was, his intentions have no bearing. If I rob a bank, even if I donate that money to charity, I have still committed a crime, and will be prosecuted. Even though I may have had good intentions, even though the results may have been positive, I have still broken the law. I have no right to force bank depositors to donate to the charity of my choosing. I do not get to just make up my own rules, and neither does Donald Trump.

The aid package for Ukraine had been lawfully appropriated and approved by Congress. The Trump administration had no right to interfere with the delivery of that aid, no matter what the motivation behind it. Even if Trump is telling the truth – all available evidence says he is not – and he withheld the money due to fears of corruption, he still broke the law. If he honestly felt corruption was an issue, he should have sought the proper channels. He should have acted overtly, and transparently, using legal recourse. Instead he chose to conspire behind the scenes, and he chose to commit a crime.

There’s no other discussion that needs to happen. Trump violated the law and he needs to be held accountable. The Senate must act. The House of Representatives has done their due diligence: they held hearings, called witnesses, and passed Articles of Impeachment. They have provided the Senate with the exact tool needed to enforce the law. All the members of the Senate need to do now is follow the letter of a law, nothing more, nothing less. Every citizen, in every state, should immediately contact both their Senators and demand that they uphold the law. The Senate must impeach Donald trump.
